African Violet

Difficulty:
Moderate
Flowering

African Violets feature velvety, rounded leaves and delicate blooms in purple, pink, blue, or white. These compact green plants can flower nearly year-round and make perfect additions to bright windowsills and small spaces.

African Violet Care Guide

Environment

African Violets thrive in warm environments with consistent conditions. They prefer stable locations away from drafts, heating vents, and frequently opened doors.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. East or north-facing windows work well. Too much direct sun can burn leaves, while insufficient light prevents blooming.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid temperatures below 60°F (15°C) and protect from cold drafts.

Watering

Water from the bottom by placing the pot in water for 30 minutes, then removing. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Avoid getting water on the leaves which can cause spots.

Humidity

Moderate humidity (40-60%) is preferred. Use a small humidifier or place on a pebble tray with water to increase moisture levels.

Fertilizing

Feed with African Violet-specific fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks. Avoid fertilizing for a month after repotting.

Care Tips

  • Use African Violet-specific potting mix for best results.
  • Choose shallow pots as African Violets have shallow root systems.
  • Remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves to encourage new blooms.
  • Repot annually or when the plant becomes rootbound, usually in spring.

Common Problems

  • Lack of flowers usually indicates insufficient light or improper fertilizing.
  • Brown spots on leaves often occur from water contact - water from the bottom instead.
  • Leggy growth indicates insufficient light.
  • Powdery mildew appears as a white coating on leaves in conditions with poor air circulation.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Active growth period - a good time for repotting and dividing.

Summer

Can bloom continuously with proper care. Protect from hot afternoon sun.

Fall

Continue regular care routine. May need supplemental light as days shorten.

Winter

Growth slows slightly. Protect from cold drafts and provide bright light.
