Amaryllis

Difficulty:
Easy
Flowering

Amaryllis features large, trumpet-shaped flowers on tall stalks above strap-like leaves. These dramatic green plants produce spectacular blooms in winter and can be encouraged to rebloom year after year.

Amaryllis Care Guide

Environment

Amaryllis bulbs are typically grown indoors in pots but can be moved outdoors in summer in warm climates. They prefer bright light and consistent temperatures when in active growth.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal when in active growth and flowering. After flowering, provide direct sun to build energy for next bloom cycle.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C) during active growth and flowering. During dormancy, cooler temperatures around 55°F (13°C) are beneficial.

Watering

Water sparingly until the flower stalk begins to grow, then increase to keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. After flowering, water regularly during the growth phase, then reduce and eventually stop during dormancy.

Humidity

Adapts to normal household humidity. No special humidity requirements.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2 weeks after flowering when the plant is in active leaf growth. Do not fertilize during dormancy or flowering.

Care Tips

  • Plant bulb in well-draining potting mix with the top 1/3 of the bulb exposed above the soil.
  • Support tall flower stalks with stakes if necessary.
  • After flowering, cut the stalk but keep the leaves growing to replenish the bulb.
  • For reblooming, provide a dormancy period of 8-10 weeks with no water in a cool, dark place.

Common Problems

  • Leggy growth indicates insufficient light after flowering.
  • Failure to rebloom usually means the bulb didn't store enough energy during the growth phase.
  • Soft, mushy bulb indicates overwatering and possible rot.
  • Red blotches on leaves may indicate excessive direct sunlight.

Seasonal Care

Spring

If winter-blooming is complete, cut flower stalk and grow in bright light to build energy.

Summer

Continue growing in bright light, including some direct sun. Can be moved outdoors.

Fall

For winter blooming, begin dormancy period in early fall - stop watering and place in cool, dark location for 8-10 weeks.

Winter

After dormancy, repot or refresh top soil, water sparingly, and place in bright location to initiate new flower stalk.
