Anthurium
Anthuriums feature glossy heart-shaped leaves and distinctive flowering spathes in red, pink, or white. These tropical green plants add a touch of exotic color to indoor spaces and can bloom year-round with proper care.
Anthurium Care Guide
Environment
Anthuriums thrive in warm, humid environments with bright, indirect light. They make excellent focal points in living spaces that receive filtered light.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate medium light but flowering will be reduced. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
Watering
Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom, then empty the drainage tray. Reduce watering in winter.
Humidity
Moderate to high humidity (50-80%) is preferred. Mist regularly or place on a humidity tray to increase moisture levels.
Fertilizing
Feed with a phosphorus-rich liquid fertilizer diluted to quarter strength every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer to encourage blooming. Reduce to monthly in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Plant in a well-draining aroid mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss.
- Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep pores clear.
- The colorful "flowers" are actually modified leaves called spathes - the true flowers are on the spadix.
- Repot every 2-3 years or when roots begin to grow through drainage holes.
Common Problems
- Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
- Brown leaf tips often signal low humidity or excessive direct sunlight.
- Lack of flowers usually means insufficient light or improper fertilizing.
- Aphids and mealybugs can attack new growth and flowers - inspect regularly.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.
Summer
Can bloom continuously with proper light and fertilizing.
Fall
Gradually reduce watering and fertilizing as growth slows.
Winter
Water sparingly and keep away from cold drafts and heating vents.
