Begonia
Begonias feature attractive foliage and delicate blooms in various colors. These versatile green plants come in many varieties, from rex begonias grown for their colorful leaves to flowering types that bloom for months.
Begonia Care Guide
Environment
Begonias prefer warm, humid environments with good air circulation. They make excellent additions to bright bathrooms or kitchens where humidity is naturally higher.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. East or north-facing windows work well. Too much direct sun can burn leaves, while insufficient light prevents blooming and causes leggy growth.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid temperatures below 60°F (15°C) and protect from cold drafts.
Watering
Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Water at the base to avoid wetting the leaves which can lead to powdery mildew. Reduce watering in winter.
Humidity
Moderate to high humidity (50-70%) is preferred. Use a humidifier or place on a pebble tray with water to increase moisture levels.
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use well-draining potting mix with added perlite or vermiculite.
- Pinch back growing tips to encourage bushier growth.
- Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooming.
- Propagate easily from stem or leaf cuttings.
Common Problems
- Powdery mildew appears as a white coating on leaves in conditions with poor air circulation.
- Leaf drop often occurs from overwatering or sudden temperature changes.
- Leggy growth indicates insufficient light.
- Mealybugs and aphids can infest new growth - inspect regularly.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting and propagation.
Summer
Peak growing and flowering season. Maintain consistent watering and fertilizing.
Fall
Gradually reduce watering and fertilizing as growth slows.
Winter
Growth slows significantly - water sparingly and keep away from cold drafts.
