Boston Fern

Difficulty:
Moderate
Air Purifying

Boston Ferns feature delicate, arching fronds with small leaflets. These classic green plants are excellent air purifiers, removing formaldehyde and xylene while adding significant humidity to indoor spaces.

Boston Fern Care Guide

Environment

Boston Ferns thrive in bright, humid environments with good air circulation. They make excellent bathroom plants due to their love of humidity and ability to tolerate lower light.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate medium light but avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the delicate fronds.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Never allow to dry out completely. Water when the surface feels slightly dry. Reduce slightly in winter.

Humidity

High humidity (60%+) is essential. Use a humidifier, mist daily, or place on a large pebble tray with water to increase moisture levels.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing in fall and winter.

Care Tips

  • Use rich, well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture.
  • Trim brown or yellowing fronds at the base to maintain appearance.
  • Provide good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
  • Submerge the entire pot in water occasionally to ensure thorough hydration.

Common Problems

  • Brown, crispy fronds usually indicate low humidity or underwatering.
  • Yellowing fronds may indicate overwatering, poor drainage, or natural aging.
  • Pale, washed-out fronds suggest too much direct sun.
  • Spider mites are common pests in dry conditions - increase humidity and inspect regularly.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting and division.

Summer

Maintain consistent watering and high humidity, especially in air-conditioned spaces.

Fall

Growth begins to slow - gradually reduce fertilizing.

Winter

Growth slows - maintain humidity but reduce watering slightly. Keep away from heating vents.
