Burro's Tail
Burro's Tail (Sedum morganianum) is a trailing succulent with plump, tear-shaped leaves that overlap to create a distinctive tail-like appearance. This unique green plant is perfect for hanging baskets and high shelves.
Burro's Tail Care Guide
Environment
Burro's Tail prefers bright locations with protection from intense afternoon sun. It works well in hanging baskets where its trailing stems can cascade downward.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some direct morning sun is beneficial, but protect from harsh afternoon sun which can scorch leaves. Insufficient light causes sparse growth.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Protect from temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
Watering
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, about once every 2-3 weeks, less in winter. Water carefully at the soil level to avoid wetting the leaves.
Humidity
Tolerates dry air very well. No need for additional humidity measures.
Fertilizing
Minimal fertilizer needed. Apply a diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.
- Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
- Handle minimally as the plump leaves detach very easily.
- Place in a location where it won't be bumped or moved frequently to prevent leaf drop.
Common Problems
- Leaf drop is common and often caused by moving the plant or improper watering.
- Shriveled leaves may indicate underwatering.
- Soft, mushy stems indicate overwatering and possible rot.
- Sparse growth with large gaps between leaves suggests insufficient light.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.
Summer
May produce small pink or red flowers at the end of stems.
Fall
Gradually reduce watering as growth slows.
Winter
Water sparingly, only when leaves show slight wrinkling.
