Low Light

The Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema) is a versatile plant with beautiful, patterned leaves in various shades of green, silver, and sometimes pink or red. This low-maintenance green plant is perfect for adding color to low-light areas.

Chinese Evergreen Care Guide

Environment

Chinese Evergreens thrive in warm, humid environments with consistent temperatures. They make excellent plants for offices, bedrooms, and living spaces with low to moderate light.

Light

Tolerates low light conditions, though variegated varieties need medium light to maintain their patterns. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C).

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter. Sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water.

Humidity

Enjoys moderate to high humidity (50-60%). Mist regularly or place on a humidity tray to increase moisture levels.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-3 months during spring and summer. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.

Care Tips

  • Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep pores clear.
  • Older plants may become leggy - prune to maintain desired shape.
  • Repot every 2-3 years or when roots become crowded.
  • Keep away from pets as the plant contains calcium oxalate crystals which are toxic if ingested.

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering or exposure to cold temperatures.
  • Brown leaf tips often signal dry air or fluoride in tap water.
  • Drooping leaves can indicate either over or underwatering - check soil moisture to determine.
  • Spider mites and mealybugs may appear if the air is too dry - increase humidity and inspect regularly.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.

Summer

Maintain consistent watering and increase humidity if in air-conditioned spaces.

Fall

Gradually reduce watering as growth slows.

Winter

Water sparingly and keep away from cold drafts and heating vents.
