Succulents

Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) is a succulent shrub with thick, spiny stems and colorful bracts that bloom year-round. This resilient green plant is extremely drought-tolerant and adds a pop of color to sunny indoor spaces.

Crown of Thorns Care Guide

Environment

Crown of Thorns thrives in bright, sunny locations. It adapts well to average home conditions and is remarkably tolerant of neglect.

Light

Full sun to bright, indirect light is essential for abundant flowering. South or west-facing windows are ideal. Insufficient light reduces blooming.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Can tolerate brief periods down to 50°F (10°C) but protect from frost.

Watering

Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, about once every 2-3 weeks, less in winter. Very drought-tolerant once established.

Humidity

Tolerates dry air very well. No need for additional humidity measures.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer to encourage blooming. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing in fall and winter.

Care Tips

  • Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.
  • Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
  • Wear gloves when handling as the milky sap is toxic and can cause skin irritation.
  • Prune as needed to maintain shape, allowing cuts to dry and heal before watering.

Common Problems

  • Lack of flowers usually indicates insufficient light.
  • Leaf drop often occurs from overwatering or sudden temperature changes.
  • Soft, mushy stems indicate overwatering and possible rot.
  • Spider mites can be a problem in dry conditions - increase humidity and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.

Summer

Can bloom continuously with proper light and occasional fertilizing.

Fall

Gradually reduce watering and fertilizing as growth slows.

Winter

Water sparingly, only when soil is completely dry. Continue to provide bright light for blooming.
