Cyclamen

Difficulty:
Moderate
Flowering

Cyclamens feature heart-shaped, patterned leaves and upswept blooms in white, pink, red, or purple. These elegant green plants add color to indoor spaces during fall and winter when many other plants are dormant.

Cyclamen Care Guide

Environment

Cyclamens prefer cool, bright environments with good air circulation. They make excellent additions to cooler rooms during their active growing season in fall and winter.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. East or north-facing windows work well. Too much direct sun can damage leaves, while insufficient light reduces blooming.

Temperature

Prefers cool temperatures between 50-65°F (10-18°C). Avoid temperatures above 70°F (21°C) which can trigger dormancy.

Watering

Water from below by placing the pot in water for 10 minutes, then removing. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Avoid getting water on the crown which can cause rot.

Humidity

Moderate humidity (40-50%) is preferred. Avoid very dry air near heating vents.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-3 weeks during active growth (fall through spring). Do not fertilize during summer dormancy.

Care Tips

  • Use well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot.
  • Remove spent flowers by twisting and gently pulling the entire stem from the base.
  • Allow to go dormant in summer by gradually reducing watering when leaves begin to yellow.
  • Store dormant tubers in a cool, dry place until new growth appears in fall.

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves and flower stalks often indicate the beginning of dormancy or overwatering.
  • Drooping leaves can indicate either over or underwatering - check soil moisture to determine.
  • Botrytis (gray mold) appears in conditions with poor air circulation and excessive moisture.
  • Aphids often attack new growth and flower buds - inspect regularly.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Blooming continues. As leaves begin to yellow, gradually reduce watering to prepare for dormancy.

Summer

Dormancy period. Reduce or stop watering and allow tuber to rest in a cool, dry place.

Fall

Growth resumes after summer dormancy. Begin regular watering and fertilizing when new growth appears.

Winter

Peak blooming season. Maintain cool temperatures and consistent care.
