Dracaena
Dracaenas feature sword-like leaves in various patterns and colors. These architectural green plants are excellent air purifiers, removing formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, and carbon dioxide.
Dracaena Care Guide
Environment
Dracaenas thrive in bright environments with consistent conditions. They come in many varieties with different leaf patterns and growth habits, making them versatile for various spaces.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate lower light but growth will slow and variegated varieties may lose their patterns. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch leaves.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
Watering
Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly but allow excess to drain. Reduce watering in winter. Sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water.
Humidity
Adapts to normal household humidity but prefers moderate humidity (40-60%).
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot.
- Brown leaf tips can be trimmed off with clean scissors following the natural leaf shape.
- Remove lower leaves as the plant grows taller to create a tree-like appearance.
- Use filtered or distilled water if possible, as Dracaenas are sensitive to chemicals in tap water.
Common Problems
- Brown leaf tips usually signal low humidity, chemicals in water, or built-up fertilizer salts.
- Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
- Pale, washed-out leaves suggest too much direct sun.
- Spider mites can infest leaves in dry conditions - inspect regularly.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.
Summer
Active growing season - maintain consistent watering and fertilizing.
Fall
Growth begins to slow - gradually reduce watering and fertilizing.
Winter
Growth slows significantly - water sparingly and keep away from cold drafts.
