Echeveria
Echeverias are rosette-forming succulents with stunning geometric shapes and often colorful leaves. These attractive green plants make perfect additions to succulent arrangements and can thrive both indoors and outdoors in the right conditions.
Echeveria Care Guide
Environment
Echeverias prefer bright locations with some direct sun. They can be grown outdoors in warm climates (USDA zones 9-11) or as houseplants in cooler regions.
Light
Bright light with some direct sun is essential for compact growth and vibrant colors. South or west-facing windows are ideal indoors. Insufficient light causes stretching and faded colors.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 50-70°F (10-21°C). Protect from temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
Watering
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, about once every 1-2 weeks, less in winter. Water at the base to avoid wetting the rosette which can cause rot.
Humidity
Tolerates dry air very well. No need for additional humidity measures. Good air circulation is important.
Fertilizing
Minimal fertilizer needed. Apply a diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix with added perlite or pumice.
- Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
- Remove dead or dried leaves from the bottom of the rosette to prevent pest problems.
- Propagate easily from leaves or offsets to create new plants.
Common Problems
- Stretched growth with increased space between leaves indicates insufficient light.
- Black spots on leaves usually indicate overwatering or water sitting in the rosette.
- Shriveled leaves may indicate underwatering.
- Mealybugs often hide at the base of leaves - treat with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.
Summer
May produce colorful flowers on tall stalks. Protect from intense afternoon sun in hot climates.
Fall
Gradually reduce watering as growth slows.
Winter
Water sparingly, only when leaves show slight wrinkling. Keep in a bright location.
