Elephant Ear
Elephant Ears (Alocasia or Colocasia) feature massive, heart-shaped leaves that create dramatic tropical statements. These bold green plants add architectural interest to indoor spaces and can grow quite large with proper care.
Elephant Ear Care Guide
Environment
Elephant Ears thrive in warm, humid environments with bright, filtered light. They need space to grow as they can become quite large indoors.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Morning sun is beneficial, but protect from harsh afternoon sun. Insufficient light causes leggy growth and smaller leaves.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Keep away from temperatures below 60°F (15°C) and cold drafts.
Watering
Keep soil consistently moist during growing season. Allow the top inch to dry between waterings. Reduce significantly in winter as the plant may go dormant.
Humidity
High humidity (60%+) is preferred. Mist regularly or place on a humidity tray to increase moisture levels.
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.
- Wipe leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep pores clear.
- Some varieties may go dormant in winter, losing most or all leaves - reduce watering and be patient for spring regrowth.
- Support larger plants to prevent leaning and stem damage.
Common Problems
- Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
- Brown leaf edges often signal low humidity or excessive direct sunlight.
- Drooping leaves can indicate either over or underwatering - check soil moisture to determine.
- Spider mites are common pests - increase humidity and inspect regularly.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting. If dormant, new growth will emerge.
Summer
Rapid growth period - maintain consistent watering and fertilizing.
Fall
Growth begins to slow - gradually reduce watering and fertilizing.
Winter
May go dormant and lose leaves - water sparingly and keep away from cold drafts.
