English Ivy
English Ivy (Hedera helix) features lobed, pointed leaves in various patterns of green and white. These versatile green plants are excellent air purifiers, removing benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene.
English Ivy Care Guide
Environment
English Ivy prefers cool, humid environments with bright, indirect light. It can be grown as a trailing or climbing plant and adapts well to hanging baskets or provided with a moss pole for support.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate medium light but variegated varieties need more light to maintain their patterns. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch leaves.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 55-70°F (13-21°C). Can tolerate brief periods down to 45°F (7°C) but protect from frost.
Watering
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter but never allow to dry completely.
Humidity
Moderate to high humidity (50-70%) is preferred. Mist regularly or place on a pebble tray with water to increase moisture levels.
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter.
- Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep pores clear.
- Provide support for climbing varieties or allow to trail from hanging baskets.
- Trim regularly to control growth and encourage bushier foliage.
Common Problems
- Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering, underwatering, or insufficient light.
- Brown leaf edges often signal low humidity or excessive direct sunlight.
- Leggy growth indicates insufficient light.
- Spider mites are common pests in dry conditions - increase humidity and inspect regularly.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting and propagation.
Summer
Maintain consistent watering and humidity. Keep cooler if possible during hot weather.
Fall
Growth begins to slow - gradually reduce watering and fertilizing.
Winter
Growth slows - water sparingly and keep away from heating vents which can dry out the plant.
