Succulents

The Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) is a popular succulent with thick, woody stems and oval-shaped leaves. This long-lived green plant is considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity in many cultures.

Jade Plant Care Guide

Environment

Jade Plants adapt to various indoor environments but prefer bright locations with some direct sun. They can be grown outdoors in warm climates (USDA zones 10-11).

Light

Bright, indirect light with some direct sun is ideal. South or west-facing windows are perfect. Insufficient light causes leggy growth and weak stems.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C) during the day and around 55°F (13°C) at night. Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Watering

Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, about once every 2-3 weeks, less in winter. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Humidity

Tolerates dry air very well. No need for additional humidity measures.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength once every 2-3 months during spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter.

Care Tips

  • Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.
  • Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
  • Prune to maintain desired shape and promote bushier growth.
  • Can be propagated easily from stem or leaf cuttings.

Common Problems

  • Soft, mushy stems or leaves indicate overwatering and possible root rot.
  • Shriveled leaves may indicate underwatering.
  • Leaf drop often occurs from sudden temperature changes or overwatering.
  • Mealybugs and scale insects can infest stems and leaves.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.

Summer

Maintain regular watering schedule. May produce small star-shaped white or pink flowers if mature.

Fall

Gradually reduce watering as growth slows.

Winter

Water sparingly, only when soil is completely dry and leaves show slight wrinkling.
