Jasmine

Difficulty:
Moderate
Flowering

Jasmine features glossy green leaves and intensely fragrant white flowers. This climbing green plant adds both beauty and wonderful scent to indoor spaces, especially when in bloom.

Jasmine Care Guide

Environment

Jasmine prefers bright locations with some direct sun. It benefits from good air circulation and can be grown as a climber with support or allowed to trail from a hanging basket.

Light

Bright light with some direct sun is essential for abundant flowering. South or west-facing windows are ideal. Insufficient light prevents blooming.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). Can tolerate brief periods down to 50°F (10°C) but protect from frost.

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist during growing and flowering seasons, allowing the top inch to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter but never allow to dry completely.

Humidity

Moderate humidity (40-60%) is preferred. Mist regularly or place on a pebble tray with water to increase moisture levels.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2 weeks during spring and summer. Switch to a phosphorus-rich fertilizer when flower buds appear.

Care Tips

  • Provide a trellis or support for climbing varieties.
  • Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth.
  • Place in a location where the fragrance can be appreciated when in bloom.
  • Cooler night temperatures (around 60°F/15°C) in fall help initiate flower buds.

Common Problems

  • Lack of flowers usually indicates insufficient light or improper pruning.
  • Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Spider mites can be a problem in dry conditions - increase humidity and inspect regularly.
  • Aphids often attack new growth and flower buds - treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting and pruning.

Summer

Maintain consistent watering and fertilizing. May bloom depending on variety.

Fall

Cooler nights help initiate flower buds in many varieties.

Winter

Many varieties bloom in winter. Reduce watering but maintain bright light.
