Difficulty:
Easy
Flowering

Kalanchoes feature thick, scalloped leaves and clusters of small, long-lasting flowers in vibrant colors. These succulent green plants are easy to care for and can bloom for months with proper conditions.

Kalanchoe Care Guide

Environment

Kalanchoes prefer bright locations with some direct sun. They adapt well to average home conditions and are drought-tolerant, making them excellent plants for beginners.

Light

Bright light with some direct sun is essential for abundant flowering. South or west-facing windows are ideal. Insufficient light prevents blooming and causes leggy growth.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) during the day and around 50-60°F (10-15°C) at night. This temperature drop helps trigger reblooming.

Watering

Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, about once every 2-3 weeks, less in winter. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Humidity

Tolerates dry air very well. No need for additional humidity measures.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing during and after flowering.

Care Tips

  • Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.
  • Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooming.
  • To encourage reblooming, provide 14 hours of darkness and 10 hours of bright light daily for about six weeks.
  • Pinch back growing tips to encourage bushier growth.

Common Problems

  • Leggy growth indicates insufficient light.
  • Soft, mushy stems or leaves indicate overwatering and possible rot.
  • Lack of flowers usually indicates insufficient light or improper day length for reblooming.
  • Mealybugs can infest stems and leaves - inspect regularly.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Active growth period - a good time for repotting if needed.

Summer

Maintain regular watering schedule. Protect from intense afternoon sun.

Fall

To initiate flower buds, provide longer nights (14+ hours of darkness) for about six weeks.

Winter

Peak flowering season for many varieties. Water sparingly and keep away from cold drafts.
