Philodendron Care Guide

Environment

Philodendrons adapt to a wide range of indoor environments. They can be grown as trailing or climbing plants and work well in most rooms of your home.

Light

Thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Can tolerate lower light conditions but may become leggy. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

Watering

Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom. Reduce watering in winter.

Humidity

Adapts to normal household humidity but appreciates higher humidity levels. Mist occasionally or place on a pebble tray with water.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.

Care Tips

  • Provide support for climbing varieties like a moss pole or trellis.
  • Trim trailing varieties to maintain desired length and encourage fuller growth.
  • Propagate easily by taking stem cuttings with nodes and placing in water or soil.
  • Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep pores clear.

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Brown leaf edges often signal low humidity or excessive direct sunlight.
  • Leggy growth indicates insufficient light.
  • Watch for spider mites and mealybugs, especially in dry environments.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting and propagation.

Summer

Can grow quickly in warm conditions - monitor watering needs.

Fall

Gradually reduce watering as growth slows.

Winter

Water sparingly and keep away from cold drafts and heating vents.
