Pothos

Difficulty:
Easy
Beginner Friendly

Pothos is a versatile trailing green plant with heart-shaped leaves that can brighten any space. It's extremely adaptable, thriving in various light conditions and requiring minimal care, making it perfect for beginners.

Pothos Care Guide

Environment

Pothos adapts to a wide range of environments, from bathrooms to offices. It can be grown in soil or in water, and works well as a hanging plant or trained to climb.

Light

Tolerates low to bright indirect light. Variegated varieties need brighter light to maintain their patterns. Avoid direct sunlight.

Temperature

Thrives in normal room temperatures between 60-85°F (15-29°C). Keep away from cold drafts.

Watering

Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Pothos will tolerate occasional underwatering but will droop when thirsty. Water less in winter.

Humidity

Adapts to normal household humidity but appreciates occasional misting, especially in dry environments.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-3 months during spring and summer. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.

Care Tips

  • Trim regularly to maintain desired length and encourage fuller growth.
  • Propagate easily by placing stem cuttings with nodes in water until roots develop.
  • Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust.
  • For fuller plants, place cuttings back into the same pot.

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves often indicate overwatering.
  • Brown, crispy leaf edges suggest underwatering or very dry air.
  • Leggy growth with small leaves means the plant needs more light.
  • Watch for mealybugs and scale insects, especially in stressed plants.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Growth accelerates - a good time for propagation.

Summer

Can grow quickly in warm conditions - monitor watering needs.

Winter

Growth slows significantly - reduce watering frequency.
