Maranta (Prayer Plant)
Prayer Plants (Maranta) feature strikingly patterned oval leaves that fold up at night like hands in prayer. These fascinating tropical green plants add visual interest and movement to indoor spaces.
Maranta (Prayer Plant) Care Guide
Environment
Prayer Plants thrive in warm, humid environments with filtered light. They make excellent bathroom plants due to their love of humidity and ability to tolerate lower light.
Light
Medium to bright indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight which can fade the distinctive leaf patterns and cause leaf burn. Too little light will slow growth and reduce leaf movement.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Keep away from temperatures below 60°F (15°C) and cold drafts.
Watering
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Use room temperature water as cold water can shock the plant. Sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water.
Humidity
High humidity (60%+) is essential. Use a humidifier, mist regularly, or place on a pebble tray with water to increase moisture levels.
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or eliminate fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use distilled water or rainwater if possible, as Prayer Plants are sensitive to chemicals in tap water.
- Increase humidity by grouping with other plants or using a humidifier.
- Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep pores clear.
- Trim brown leaf edges with clean scissors following the natural leaf shape.
Common Problems
- Curling leaves often indicate low humidity or underwatering.
- Brown leaf edges usually signal low humidity or fluoride/chlorine in water.
- Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering, poor drainage, or too much direct sun.
- Spider mites are common pests - increase humidity and inspect regularly.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.
Summer
Maintain consistent watering and high humidity, especially in air-conditioned spaces.
Fall
Gradually reduce watering and fertilizing as growth slows.
Winter
Reduce watering but maintain humidity. Keep away from cold drafts and heating vents.
