String of Pearls
String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) features unique bead-like leaves on long, trailing stems. This distinctive green plant creates a dramatic cascading effect and makes a striking addition to hanging planters and high shelves.
String of Pearls Care Guide
Environment
String of Pearls prefers bright locations with some protection from intense direct sun. It works beautifully in hanging baskets where its trailing stems can grow freely.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some direct morning sun is beneficial, but protect from harsh afternoon sun which can scorch the pearls. Insufficient light causes sparse growth.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Watering
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, about once every 2-3 weeks, less in winter. The pearls will look slightly shriveled when thirsty.
Humidity
Tolerates dry air very well. No need for additional humidity measures.
Fertilizing
Minimal fertilizer needed. Apply a diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter.
Care Tips
- Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix with added perlite or pumice.
- Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
- Coil long strings on top of the soil rather than letting them hang too long if they become unwieldy.
- Propagate easily by placing a cutting with several pearls on moist soil.
Common Problems
- Shriveled pearls may indicate underwatering.
- Soft, mushy pearls indicate overwatering and possible rot.
- Sparse growth with large gaps between pearls suggests insufficient light.
- Mealybugs often hide where pearls attach to stems - treat with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
Seasonal Care
Spring
Growth accelerates - a good time for repotting if needed.
Summer
May produce small white flowers with a cinnamon-like scent.
Fall
Gradually reduce watering as growth slows.
Winter
Water sparingly, only when pearls show slight wrinkling.
